Pretty sure your statistics are going to depend heavily on where you are, as will crime density. Actually, the statistics I've seen suggest more strongly that poverty's a much, much better indicator for crime than any other factor with the exception of violent insanity. Of course, in many area of the US (and probably at least to some degree elsewhere), there's a pretty strong statistical correlation between race and wealth. And no, it's really not as simple as a "those people are lazy" thing. This is all material that's pretty well covered by sociology.
Beware statistical data. It's pretty easy to infer all kinds of things if statistics are handled recklessly, most commonly by ignoring some variables in a profoundly multidimensional issue. There are still people trying to argue that global warming has stopped, citing statistical data where they use a sample size too small to prove anything--but the graph sure looks flat. Remember that the easiest person to deceive is yourself.
